在金刚乘里，加持的根本是上师，事业的根本是护法。

在噶玛噶举的传承中，第二世大宝法王，噶玛巴希说道，谈到上师，就是噶玛巴；谈到护佑与广传教法者，那么就是大黑天护法，玛哈嘎拉。黑宝冠（噶玛巴）与黑袍护法是不可分的。
噶玛巴希，曾在其修行传记中提到：「有一次，玛哈嘎拉容貌的坛城出现在净观中，覆满了天地，并且持续了一整天。再者，玛哈嘎拉的眼睛就像日月一般，放射出万丈光芒；祂的嘴里发出雷鸣般的「吽」，从中生起无量的战胜一切表相的佛事业。 」第十世噶玛巴，却英多杰，八岁时，在坐床大典中，亦观见护法玛哈嘎拉。第十六世大宝法王更有一张至今都为人啧啧称奇的照片-法王在修玛哈嘎拉时，玛哈嘎拉显形于法王的心轮上，与法王合而为一。这些都说明了历任噶玛巴与玛哈嘎拉深厚且不可分的因缘。

后世的弟子众，你们若能具备信心与誓句而修持此传承，护法 ” 玛哈嘎拉 ” 将如影随形的来作守护。

~ 第二世大宝法王噶玛巴希

玛哈嘎拉为金刚乘重要的护法本尊，若能虔诚地礼敬供养、礼拜与修持，蒙受威猛具力的护法 大黑天加持护佑：

一、迅速消解修行佛法与世间法种种障难违缘。

二、消除众生的贫穷。

三、破除恶符咒诅、邪神魔障和冤敌之侵害，让行者内、外、密障碍消除，息、增、怀、诛四事顺利成就。

四、增上福慧寿命，具足威权、名望，资财富饶。

五、家庭吉祥兴盛和乐，圆满众生一切善愿等殊胜功德。

The Great Black Cloak Mahakala Bernagchen is the personal protector of the Karmapa and the special protector of the Karma Kagyu.
